The 2018 FIFA World Cup is almost around the corner. It is scheduled to take place in Russia from 14 June to 15 July 2018, after the country was awarded the hosting rights on 2 December 2010.
So we thought it would be great if we could brush up our football vocabulary. So here are some terms that will prepare you for the upcoming FIFA world cup:
1. Goalkeeper or Goalie -
A player whose duty is to prevent the ball, from entering or crossing the goal area or box.
2. Golden Goal -
In some football matches, a golden goal is the first goal scored in extra time, which wins the match for the team that scores it.
3. Handball -
A handball occurs if any player, other than the team's goalkeeper within his own penalty area, touches the ball with hand when in play.
4. In - swinger -
A ball kicked, especially from a corner, so as to move through the air in a curve towards the goal or the center.
5. Penalty shoot - out -
A method of deciding the winner of a drawn match, in which players from each team attempt to score with a penalty kick.
6. Red card -
A card of a red color displayed by a referee to indicate that a player has been sent off.
7. Sending - off or Ordering - off -
An instance where the player is being told to leave the field by the referee, as a punishment for a serious offence.
8. Silver goal -
A goal scored in a full half of extra time that is played if a match is drawn. This goal counts as the winner if it is the only goal scored in the full half or full period of extra time.
9. Wall pass -
A term used one player passes the ball to another and sprints forward to receive the quickly played return.
10. Yellow card -
A card of yellow color displayed by a referee to indicate that a player has been officially cautioned for some offence.
